FAQ
1. Why choose a hardshell roof tent like the Taiga 13 cm?

The Taiga 13 cm is designed for those who want a roof tent that's quick to open, easy to handle and discreet when closed. It's a model particularly suited to adventurers or mobile couples who prioritise everyday efficiency. Compared to a softshell tent, a hardshell eliminates the hassle of handling the protective cover during opening and closing.

2. What makes the Taiga 13 cm model unique?

The Taiga 13 cm is ultra-thin and stands out with its ultra-compact, aerodynamic design while featuring the same innovative panoramic opening system as the other hardshell models in the Swisskings range.

Its innovative retractable mosquito net system, mounted on the outside, provides a 180° terrace. You get an unobstructed viewing angle – perfect for amateur photographers. Sleeping under the stars while being protected from mosquitoes takes on its full meaning, as the mosquito net lets you see outside without being enclosed in fabric.

If garage height is a constraint, the Taiga 13 cm is a smart choice.

3. Do you lose comfort with a thinner tent?

The slim profile of the Taiga 13 cm prioritises compactness, which involves some differences in use. It's not possible to leave bulky items inside (pillows, duvet, equipment, thermal insulation), unlike thicker hardshell models.

However, it still offers:

  • A comfortable sleeping area with a 5 cm memory foam mattress (compared to 7 cm on the Taiga Pro and Taiga Z models)
  • Excellent ventilation with natural airflow thanks to an opening at the foot of the bed
  • The same terrace as the Taiga Pro

It's a deliberate trade-off for practical everyday use.

4. Is there more condensation inside a hardshell than in a softshell tent?

Like the other models in the Swisskings range, the Taiga 13 cm uses the breathable Swisskings fabric that evacuates 28,000 g/m²/24 h, efficiently removing moisture.

For comparison: 2 people produce approximately 1,100 g of water vapour in 8 hours. Over the same period, the Swisskings fabric can evacuate up to 9,328 g/m² – roughly 8.5 times more water vapour than what is produced during one night.

Unlike the majority of hardshell or softshell roof tents on the market, this performance is measured and certified by SGS according to the JIS L 1099:2021 standard (method B1).

5. Who would you primarily recommend the Taiga 13 cm to?

The Taiga 13 cm is suitable for:

  • 2 adults (sleeping with a small child is possible)
  • Adventurers who need simplicity
  • Those who change spots daily
  • Those with limited garage height
6. Does the Taiga 13 cm annex really make a difference?

Yes. The Taiga 13 cm / Taiga Pro annex truly changes how the model is used. It provides extra space for gear, a pet, or additional sleeping arrangements depending on the setup you choose.

This is what allows the Taiga 13 cm to be more than just a hardshell for two – it becomes a more versatile solution for travelling with more people.

7. Why choose the Taiga 13 cm over a softshell roof tent?

The main advantage of the Taiga 13 cm is its speed of use. A hardshell requires less handling than a softshell tent, opens in 30 seconds, and offers a more direct everyday experience.

It comes standard with built-in features such as interior LED lighting and an anti-condensation under-mattress, reinforcing its premium positioning.

Heavier than a softshell model, it requires your roof to support at least 75 kg of dynamic load. Also check the compatibility of your roof bars and factor in their weight.

8. What is the difference between a Taiga 13 cm and the Taiga Pro or Taiga Z?

The thickness: The Taiga Pro or Z, 9 cm taller, allow you to keep your pillows, duvet and thermal insulation inside when closed, unlike the Taiga 13 cm which cannot store them.

The opening: The Taiga 13 cm and Taiga Pro open in a V shape: one side lifts up, creating a higher zone on one side and a lower one on the other. The Taiga Z opens in a Z shape: both sides lift up.

Accessories: With the Taiga 13 cm, accessories such as an awning or shower do not attach to the tent itself. They simply mount on your vehicle's roof bars, as if the tent weren't there.

If garage height is a constraint, the Taiga 13 cm is the smart choice. If height isn't an issue, the Taiga Pro or Z offer a different bivouac experience. But be careful to check the weight your roof can handle while driving, as the Taiga Pro (90 kg) and Taiga Z (95 kg) are heavier than the Taiga 13 cm.

9. Can you carry gear on top of the Taiga 13 cm?

Yes. The Taiga 13 cm can be fitted with upper roof bars, allowing you to carry additional gear such as a paddle board, surfboard, water tank or storage box.

The load capacity is 100 kg with the tent closed and 30 kg with the tent open. These values do not include your roof's own load capacity – remember to check it.

This is a real advantage for outdoor enthusiasts who want to keep a compact setup while maintaining versatility on the roof.

What does a 10,000 mm water column mean?

A value of 10,000 mm means that:

  • the fabric can withstand the pressure exerted by a 10-meter-high column of water
  • without allowing water to penetrate

👉 In practical terms:

  • 10,000 mm = heavy rain + wind
  • pressure far higher than standard vertical rainfall
  • considered highly waterproof for outdoor textiles

What is the Water Repellency Spray Test?

The Water Repellency Spray Test measures a fabric’s ability to repel water. With a score of 95/100, the Swisskings fabric effectively repels water and ensures a dry interior, even during heavy rainfall.

Why this test is relevant for a rooftop tent

For a rooftop tent, the Spray Test verifies that:

  • water beads and runs off the fabric,
  • the fabric does not saturate quickly,
  • breathability remains effective (less saturation = less condensation),
  • comfort is maintained in light to heavy rain.

Why is a breathability rating of 28,000 g/m²/24 h essential?

This high value indicates the fabric’s ability to evacuate internal moisture. The Swisskings fabric can transmit approximately 1.164 kg of water vapor per m² per hour, and nearly 28,000 g/m²/24 h.

Unlike many rooftop tents on the market, Swisskings fabric has been independently tested by SGS according to the JIS L 1099:2021 (Method B1) standard.

This level of performance places Swisskings fabric among the very high-end outdoor materials, comparable to certain benchmark membranes, while retaining all the essential qualities required for a rooftop tent:

  • Thermal comfort: prevents heat and moisture buildup
  • Optimal ventilation: reduces condensation
  • Consistently dry interior: ideal for humid climates
  • Weather protection
  • Durability
  • Wind resistance

Why is a fabric free from harmful substances essential?

Some phthalates are classified as CMR substances (carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic) or as endocrine disruptors. As they are not permanently bound to plastics, they may gradually migrate into the air, dust or through direct contact.

Swisskings has developed a PVC-free technical fabric, compliant with current European regulations (REACH) and free from phthalates classified as SVHC.

“Is the Swisskings fabric safe for health, including for children or during prolonged use?”

The materials used for Swisskings rooftop tents have been tested using gas chromatography (GC), a reference analytical method allowing precise identification and quantification of regulated substances.

Test results show a level of 50 mg/kg, while the limit set by the European Union is 1,000 mg/kg, meaning a value 20 times below the authorized threshold.

This compliance ensures safe use, including during prolonged use in confined environments such as a rooftop tent, and within a family setting.

Swisskings prioritizes materials that meet European standards to ensure an optimal balance between performance, durability and user safety.

Please note: the roof bars and 30l water tank used are sold separately
